Mining, smeltering, trading and development as a marketing center were the basis of Toston’s growth. When mines closed, and earthquakes and fires plagued the small community its life was nearly ended.

From 1860 to 1880 the area was known as Poverty Flats and that name endured in newspapers as late as 1916.

Later, Toston’s namesake, Thomas Toston, was appointed postmaster and looked after the small postal operation in a building on his ranch, but it wasn’t until 1882 that the town was renamed for him.
